NEWS FROM THE FEMINIST CAUCUS
By Anne Burke, Chair. With the November 1 deadline fast approaching for submissions to The Pat Lowther Award (see League web site for submission requirements), it might be good to keep in mind the list of Previous Winners, from 1981 to 2008 (also posted). One suggestion was to match these with a list of how many also (independently) won the Governor General’s Award. Lowther was not only a poet who died relatively young (she was brutally murdered), but she was a League President, the first woman, perhaps, in the early years of this organization, an important observation. Some of us believe that the Lowther is an illustrious award that deserves wider publicity. For full report click here.
NEWFOUNDLAND REPORT
By Nellie Strowbridge. The cozy Humber Valley is blooming with autumn colours dying for a poet’s paintbrush as I sit at my laptop, hoping my new novel has some poetic moments.
After a busy summer, poets are going into the closet or, if need be, coming out of their closets to write tonnes of poetry. Marian Frances White is taking a much needed break to work on her poetry collection after pulling together a wonderful conference in St. John’s.
Brian Campbell from Montreal attended The League of Canadian Poets Conference held in St. John’s this year. He was inspired by words from my last book The Newfoundland Tongue to write a poem with a Downeast flavour He read Bringing Summer to the Rock on Jeff Gilhooly’s CBC morning show. Brian has other good news. His manuscript of prose poems, tentatively titled Field of Gems has been accepted for publication by Signature Editions in Spring, 2009. For full report click here.
